This project identifies the importance of radio within today’s society, and it’s impact on community’s integration.
The local division of the BBC Radio currently uses the Broadcasting House in Northampton as a Broadcasting and Production studio. Half of the facilities and space within the building is currently not used due to the decreasing interest in the radio by the public.
This design proposal incorporates radical change to the interior of the building by removing most of the existing interior walls, and converting the studio into an open space workspace, exhibition space and recording studios.
The BBC Radio has not used broadcasting House basement for several years. There is an intention of converting the basement into a series of recording studios which intentionally could be then used by any member of the public on low cost, and by booking in advance. This supports the community by helping local artists grow and advertise.
The ground floor would host a BBC Radio museum gallery in which the visitors can experiment a whole range of interactive activities and learn the history of the Northampton Radio. The gallery would also occasionally host temporary exhibitions by local artists interested in broadcasting and media world, both helping the artists to gain publicity and convince visitors to listen to their local radio.
The first and second floor of the building would be converted from empty spaces to a spacious open plan working area for the BBC Radio. Both floors would be open for the public, exposing the BBC Radio cast working live. First floor would also include an outdoor cafeteria for public and a second floor outdoor cafeteria for the members of staff.
